Danny is only five years old but in the words of Old Mr Hallorann he is a ‘shiner,’ aglow with psychic voltage。 When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook hotel, Danny’s visions grow out of control。

As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own。 It is meant to be empty。 So who is the lady in Room 217 and who are the masked guests going up and down the elevator? And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive?

Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel – and that too is beginning to shine。

Oooooow my gosh。 This is the first book that I read of King, and my first ever horror story。 Lemme tell you this: it did not dissappoint。Everything is this book was just perfectly written。 The characters, the family dynamics, the Overlook, the eerie feeling of being closed off from the world, and above all: THE HORROR。 I'm not even going to explain that any further, becaude than I'll just totally spoil the book。 Aaaand I think everyone else that loved this book already wrote amazing revies to re Oooooow my gosh。 This is the first book that I read of King, and my first ever horror story。 Lemme tell you this: it did not dissappoint。Everything is this book was just perfectly written。 The characters, the family dynamics, the Overlook, the eerie feeling of being closed off from the world, and above all: THE HORROR。 I'm not even going to explain that any further, becaude than I'll just totally spoil the book。 Aaaand I think everyone else that loved this book already wrote amazing revies to read ahahhaa。 Soooo go read tis book, because for me, it had everything I wanted and expected to read to read in a Stephen King book 💃 。。。more

2like it was okay, i would never pick it up and read it again。 it was very difficult to get through at the beginning and middle because there was so much detail about seemingly unrelated things。 like they could have cut so many unnecessary parts out, but they didn’t and that made the book extremely long。 like 659 pages is ridiculous。 the first 250 pages were so bland, whereas the last 150 pages were filled with so much。 the storyline was sort of interesting but it wasn’t scary。 i wanted to stop 2like it was okay, i would never pick it up and read it again。 it was very difficult to get through at the beginning and middle because there was so much detail about seemingly unrelated things。 like they could have cut so many unnecessary parts out, but they didn’t and that made the book extremely long。 like 659 pages is ridiculous。 the first 250 pages were so bland, whereas the last 150 pages were filled with so much。 the storyline was sort of interesting but it wasn’t scary。 i wanted to stop reading a few times (a lot within the first 400 pages), but still ending up pushing through and finishing it because the last 150 pages or so were fairly intriguing。 。。。more

Loved reading it again! Stephen King is an amazing storyteller。 I read few of his books as a teenagers but only understood them a little。 I decided to revisit them as a grown up to see how I'd feel about them。The Shining was the first on my list and god I wasn't disappointed! I still feel just as great as I did reading it the first time。 It still gave me the chills。。。I'll be revisiting Carrie and Misery next! Loved reading it again!

I do prefer the film, however, the book does an astounding job towards character development while the film tends to go more so for atmosphere and show off what the soundtrack and cinematography can do for the story in film form。 Certain things such as Jack using a mallet rather than an axe provides a more uniquely memorable weapon, while an axe would be much more pragmatic in a situation like this, the mallet adds a more surreal edge to book。 Overall, I think the book has a much different feel I do prefer the film, however, the book does an astounding job towards character development while the film tends to go more so for atmosphere and show off what the soundtrack and cinematography can do for the story in film form。 Certain things such as Jack using a mallet rather than an axe provides a more uniquely memorable weapon, while an axe would be much more pragmatic in a situation like this, the mallet adds a more surreal edge to book。 Overall, I think the book has a much different feel to the film, so much so that these two entities aren't as much as being at ends with one another, rather they feel more like separate entries。 I loved them both, and this book especially is probably king's finest work。 。。。more

I thought of some twist and turns in story but somehow it was a straightforward 。 But i might say it was very well written and scenes were described beautifully 。 I would recommend anytime if someone wants to read a horror book 。

I listened to the audio book。I'm so glad that I enjoyed this! This will probably be the last King book I'll be reading, and I want to leave his work on a good note。 I've read multiple books by King, and I don't like his writing style even though I want to。 I can't stand the long drawn out plots, child orgies, dumb characters, etc。 I really liked the characters in this work though。 They were realistic and interesting。 I could definitely believe their situation could happen based on their personal I listened to the audio book。I'm so glad that I enjoyed this! Fantastic novel with complex characters。 It would have been easy to make Jack Torrence either a straight-up bad guy or innocent possessed by ghosts, but he's more complex than that。 Danny and the situation with Tony and his connection to Hallorann is fascinating to read。 Looking forward to reading the sequel! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Horror is usually not a genre I'm interested in, but I picked this one up out of curiosity and read the first three pages and was instantly hooked。 This is an amazing book。 I feel like it goes well beyond horror and deserves a place in the literary canon。 I think what makes it so good is that, for all its supernatural and creepy elements, it's a very real story。 The characters resonate because they're so real, and the way King explores the inner workings of their minds is masterful。 I haven't se Horror is usually not a genre I'm interested in, but I picked this one up out of curiosity and read the first three pages and was instantly hooked。 This is an amazing book。 I feel like it goes well beyond horror and deserves a place in the literary canon。 I think what makes it so good is that, for all its supernatural and creepy elements, it's a very real story。 The characters resonate because they're so real, and the way King explores the inner workings of their minds is masterful。 I haven't seen the movie but I honestly can't imagine it being 1/10 as good as the book without the inner thoughts of the characters。 I'd heard a lot about the book being scary, and there definitely are really creepy and scary things that happen (obviously), but the word I would use to describe it is disturbing。 Jack's disintegration from a flawed man desperately trying to overcome addiction and abusive behavior and to start a new life with his family, to a crazed, murderous maniac is nothing short of tragic, and far more terrifying than the hedge animals or Room 217。 The way his mind turns on itself and his family is the real horror of the story。 Perhaps because that is the part of the story that is real。 。。。more

Much has already been said about this absolute classic from Stephen King。 Suspenseful, thrilling, scary, terrifying。。。 It all holds true and will remain one of his greatest works。 One thing that makes it stand out far from it's movie version, which King himself confirms, is that the book is truly heartbreaking。 We find the protagonist down in the dumps, fired, lonely in his own home, lost in his own vice, while still loving his family so much it is almost unbearable。 They choose, as a family, th Much has already been said about this absolute classic from Stephen King。 Suspenseful, thrilling, scary, terrifying。。。 It all holds true and will remain one of his greatest works。 One thing that makes it stand out far from it's movie version, which King himself confirms, is that the book is truly heartbreaking。 We find the protagonist down in the dumps, fired, lonely in his own home, lost in his own vice, while still loving his family so much it is almost unbearable。 They choose, as a family, that the hotel in which they would spend the entire winter would bring them closer together and make Jack, the protagonist, come over his writer's block。 The hotel itself, however, has different plans for this broken man and the heartbreak commences as soon as he turns to his old vice。 You can't escape relating to his struggles and you keep rooting for him, in spite of his obvious flaws, yet it all seems to be fruitless。 Beyond the horror and the many scares King offers in "The Shining" he also offers an insight into the troubling mind of a broken author and shows the consequences his ultimate fall bears on his loving family。 。。。more

this book was haunting and beautiful and terrifying and everything i could ever ask for out of a thriller book。 perhaps i’m not enough of a cinephile or just haven’t seen the movie in a while, but the nuance and attention to detail king places on every moment in this book amazes me in comparison to the movie; granted they are almost two completely different stories。 there’s not a piece of information included that doesn’t add to the story, which is something i appreciate so much; king doesn’t wa this book was haunting and beautiful and terrifying and everything i could ever ask for out of a thriller book。 perhaps i’m not enough of a cinephile or just haven’t seen the movie in a while, but the nuance and attention to detail king places on every moment in this book amazes me in comparison to the movie; granted they are almost two completely different stories。 there’s not a piece of information included that doesn’t add to the story, which is something i appreciate so much; king doesn’t waste the readers time, he fills every word with meaning and purpose。 i def wanna read more king after this, because his descriptions and diction sent chills down my spine with ever scene。 。。。more
